Since the early 1960s the Cuban Revolution has been deeply involved in the struggles for freedom in Africa. From the Algerian revolution in the early 1960s to the Congo and the defense of Angola’s newly won independence against the white racist South African regime’s invasion of the country, Cuban internationalist volunteers have joined shoulder-to-shoulder with their brothers and sisters in Africa. They have also sent substantial medical teams to combat Ebola and provide for basic medical needs across the continent.
The presentation will be based on several books by leaders of the Cuban Revolution, Nelson Mandela from South Africa, Thomas Sankara from Burkina Faso, and Jack Barnes from the USA. Hear about the freedom struggles in Africa against colonialization, imperialism and underdevelopment and how Cuba’s internationalism played a role.
Come and join the discussion and share your own experiences.
Speaker: Greg McCartan -- former journalist for the Militant newspaper. Reported from Southern Africa from 1990 – 1994. Volunteer, Pathfinder Books in London.
Please note: this presentation will be in English.
