How do we save sovereignty in a digital age? (with Paris Marx)

av Attac Norge

Sovereignty is the ability of a nation to govern their own state. As society has become digital, the definition of state has changed. It no longer refers only to land borders, but digital borders. It's hard to escape discussions of "digital sovereignty". Where does our data live? Who has access to it? Who controls it? And who can turn off our access to our own data and services?

Europe has built their digital society on top of Big Tech companies based in the US. As the relationship between Europe and the US has changed and continues to change, Europe now questions: do we depend too heavily on technology providers beyond our own sovereignty? What are the risks? What should we be concerned about?

Tekna's network for developers invites Paris Marx, Elisabet Haugsbø, Inga Strümke, Torjus Solheim Eckhoff, Johannes Brodwall and others to explore these questions from technological, political, and societal perspectives.

Paris Marx is a Canadian technology critic and journalist, and the host of the podcast Tech Won’t Save Us. He challenges dominant tech narratives and brings a geopolitical lens to the discussion.

Strengthening digital sovereignty may reshape the role of Big Tech in Norway — but it can also create new jobs, build strategic competence and strengthen European and Nordic capacity. Real sovereignty requires more than political ambition; it requires building alternatives.
